World Emoji Day

Are you ready to emoji?

As it’s 📆 World Emoji Day, what better time is there to celebrate 🥳 the small but mighty keyboard characters and teach you the ‘why’ and ‘how to’ of our favourite conversational aids?

Before we jump into our emoji tips and tricks, let’s step back in time to learn more about the tiny visuals that can add a lot to your content.

Created in the 1990s, emojis have only really become popular in the last decade, created to help with self-expression when communicating online. By 2011, Apple made the emoji a permanent part of its keyboard and they’re now adored by the masses – over 700m emojis are used in Facebook posts every day

As you scroll through social media and receive emails from brands, you’ve probably noticed that emojis are becoming more and more common in their messaging. But how can you adopt them yourself? And which emojis should you use and which should you avoid? 🤔

Why emoji?

Emojis are a handy tool for conveying something that text cannot. For example, adding a wee 😉 hints that you’re making a joke, and a📍 can be used to indicate a location. They also add a little something extra to your content, humanising your brand and adding a relatability for your audience.

Plus – when you include them in email subject lines they can help to increase open and response rates by about 25%and interactions by 57% on Facebook posts. Now, that’s exciting! (…Or should we say 😆?)

Now you know all the facts, how do you emoji?

How to emoji

It’s important that before you emoji, you fully understand your audience as demographics will affect the types and number of emojis you use in your content.

Once you’ve gathered all your research, it’s time to set up your emoji keyboard. Save this simple cheat sheet of ways you can do this from your laptop 💻:

Mac: control + command + spacebar to open the emoji keyboard
Windows: windows key + full stop or windows key + semicolon

You can also head over to emojipedia.org where you can 🔍 for the right emoji for your content and copy and paste it into your post!

If you’re an emoji novice, though, before adding them to your content it might be a good idea to do a little research as some emojis can have double meanings (hint: 🍆🍑).
