The Power of Storytelling with the BBC

To celebrate the BBC’s 100th birthday, the corporation has been busy carrying out the BBC Share Your Story Schools Tour, visiting 400,000 secondary school students nationwide with the aim of inspiring the next generation by showcasing local businesses within the creative industry. The team reached out to Planit Scotland, looking for a junior member of the organisation to join them on their visit to Inverness Royal Academy and that’s where I came in – Planit Scotland’s junior content marketer, Halle.

Playing BBC for the Morning

Off I went on Friday, November 11, feeling slightly apprehensive at the fact I was representing Planit alone for the first time, however excited to work with the BBC (Radio 1 often keeps me company during my days working from home).

After signing into the school under “BBC”, I was set up with a mic and sat in a director’s chair (fancy, I know). I joined a panel featuring two other businesses from the creative industry – the National Trust for Scotland and BBC Alba – with Scottish broadcaster and television presenter, Robyn Richford, hosting the event.

In an interview-style discussion, we chatted about where we work, what we do, why storytelling is important within each of our industries and how we got into our roles. We also offered advice to the secondary students based on our time at school, sharing what we would have told our younger selves.

Throwback to School

If I could go back in time, I’d tell my younger self to relax and that it’s fine if you don’t know what you want to do. During my final years of school I felt a lot of pressure to know what I was doing with my life and when I compared myself to my peers, I felt a little clueless. Turns out this is completely normal and even now, I’m still often winging it – and that’s okay!

What’s View Blog Postinteresting is, during the event, I realised that although I and the other panellists have quite different roles, we all had one thing in common: storytelling. We share stories every single day without even realising it. From recalling a work day to telling our friends about the TV shows and films we enjoy, it’s all storytelling. Even now writing this blog, I’m telling a story!

I was thrilled to take part in the event, despite my initial nerves. Meeting people in the industry and hearing their stories was inspiring and I felt proud to have been offered the opportunity to share my story, along with as much wisdom as I could offer, to secondary school students.

While I have you here, it’s a good time to remind you that if you have a story to tell, Planit is on hand to help you get it out there. Get in touch to learn more.
