Reverse Advent Calendar – Giving Back!

At Planit Scotland, we are urging other local businesses – like us – and families to take part in Blythswood Care’s Highland Foodbank Reverse Advent Calendar for Christmas. Using the list provided by the Highland Foodbank, each member of team Planit will take it in turns to bring in the requested item, which will be added to food donation boxes to be given to families around the Highlands.

Part of the Trussell Trust’s UK-wide foodbank network, the Highland Foodbank fed over 7000 people from across the Highlands, totalling 50 tonnes of food in 2018 alone. In order for their work to continue, the Highland Foodbank has to rely on the generosity of the public, whether it be through their giving of non-perishable food items or financial donations. However, the organisation is more than the food parcels, they can be a listening ear, shoulder to cry on and offer support to the person in crisis.

Christmas can be a tough time for many and there is pressure to spend, which is not what the holiday is all about, and that can so easily be forgotten. Our Managing Director, Cecilia Grigor, commented on our decision to take part in the Reverse Advent Calendar this year:

“It’s easy to forget what Christmas is about and we can all be guilty of thinking of the materialistic things we want in life. People often don’t think twice about swiping their bank cards or buying that treat, but this isn’t the case for everyone. By taking part in this, Planit are hoping to get back to the true meaning of Christmas and allow others to have a Christmas to remember.”

We spoke to Lorna Dempster, the Foodbank Manager, regarding the Reverse Advent Calendar being an important drive for their donations:

“Annually Highland Foodbank helps around 7000 people with emergency food, people who find themselves in a crisis for one reason or another.  Winter can be a particularly difficult time for families and individuals, when fuel costs are at their highest, and budgets are low.  You’ll notice that our Reverse Advent Calendar doesn’t have anything Christmas specific.  This is because items like selection boxes and mince pies come to us naturally, without us having to ask for them.  This year we want to concentrate on specific items Foodbank is often shorter of all year round.  The items on the calendar will really boost our stocks, enabling us to provide emergency food to local people well into 2020.  We really appreciate your support.”

If you would like to take part in the Reverse Advent Calendar, you can find out information, along with which item to put into your parcel on which day, on www.blythswood.org. Items that the Highland Foodbank currently require include tinned ham, tinned corned beef, tinned stew, tinned mince, tinned potatoes and tinned custard. As well as soap powder, washing up liquid, shaving foam and razors. There is also an urgent need for Size 5 & 6 nappies and cat food. You can drop off any donations to the organisation’s FoodBank Warehouse on Glebe Street, Inverness IV1 1RF. Join Team Planit and make a difference this Christmas!
