Highland Garden Fest

As we head into the summer months and enjoy this Highland heatwave, the Planit Scotland team are bursting with ideas, one of which was planted and is blossoming into the Highland Garden Fest. That’s right, we are growing the very first gardening festival in the Highlands of Scotland while throwing around a ridiculous number of plant puns!

The inaugural Highland Garden Fest is set to take place in the beautiful Inverness Botanic Gardens, 11am-4pm 22nd July 2018. All welcome, it’s free to attend! Celebrating everything from nurturing flowers to growing fruit and vegetables, landscaping and attracting wildlife to your garden.

We’re delighted to have award-winning WoodBlocX, previously featured on Dragons Den, as headline sponsors. As we countdown to the event, they’re offering up the chance to win a £500 prize! You can enter the competition here.

On the day you can talk to the horticulturalists and learn how to spruce up your garden for summer. Join one of the garden ‘walk abouts’ to take in the variety of plants and growing conditions that reveal the drama of plant diversity ranging from the tropical rainforests to arid, heat-scorched desert.

Get to know the colourful fish in the Fishkeeper Scotland display aquarium, find our how to plant aquatic plants in baskets and tune into helpful advice on how to set up a wildlife pond. Learn about bumblebee and butterfly friendly flowers and the lifecycle of these insects with family crafts from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and the Butterfly Conservation. Work on your flower arranging skills and see some of the creations from the Inverness Floral Art Club. Take tips from the Hawthorn Allotments members with their delicious locally grown fruit and vegetables.

Take on a DIY challenge to build your own bug hotel or bird box, understanding the different types of creatures, their habitats and the importance of encouraging them into gardens. Nature Days at Aigas Rangers will have lots of nature-inspired games for the kids and you can help the Abiachan Forest Trust highlight the plight of pollinators, make some muni-beasts and a flight of flags to keep pigeons off the brassicas.

Did you know it’s actually the 25th anniversary of our local Botanic Gardens so what better way to celebrate than an activity-packed day amongst the petals! It’ll be a lot of fun. Beleaf us!
