Planit Scotland

An ASB Member For The Day

The Association of Scottish Businesswomen (ASB) Conference & Business Awards returned to Edinburgh on Tuesday, November 8, marking the first post-pandemic face-to-face gathering of this spectacular group of female business entrepreneurs, leaders and thinkers.

With Cecilia unable to attend this year’s event, it was up to me – Lauren L – to represent Team Planit by becoming an honorary ASB member for the day.

Here’s the inside scoop on what I got up to…

A is for award-winning

With a delicious afternoon tea of finger sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, and a whole plate of mouth-watering cakes and traybakes, this was a day for celebrating Scotland’s badass, yet always classy, businesswomen – I’m still giggling at Sheila Hogan, CEO of Biscuit Tin, and her story of taking on the Dragon’s Den last year!

Made up of eight categories, the awards acknowledged the innovation, resilience and dedication of Scottish businesswomen, celebrating a variety of industries, expertise and individuals.

Cecilia was a finalist in the Businesswoman of the Year category, with Planit Scotland up for Most Enterprising Business, and although we didn’t win the top prize – a bittersweet relief to me, who had been panicking about having to make a speech – the afternoon’s proceedings didn’t disappoint.

In fact, I was incredibly excited to watch our client, Donna Smith from Thystle Ltd, gain a highly commended award in the Woman of Inspiration category. Afterall, win or lose, we were all there to support the incredible businesswomen of Scotland.

S is for splendiferous

The event was not just splendid, it was splendiferous.

From the moment I entered into the registration room, to my final goodbye, I felt a sense of belonging – I chatted, I connected and I even took a business card!

Of course, I knew the event would be fine, but you can’t help first time nerves.

After enjoying a cup of tea and delicious pastry – I promise I didn’t spend all day eating – we were introduced to Rosie Barron and her business, The Tidy Coo. As the first speaker of the day, she woke us all up with her energetic storytelling and unfaltering enthusiasm for her business – she’s a master certified KonMari consultant and a member of APDO (The Association of Professional DeClutterers and Organisers).

Remember Marie Kondo? Well Rosie is the ASB’s Marie Kondo, and I loved her! Helping us all to declutter our homes and declutter our work desks, she shared all her expert tips and tricks for creating a pristine business environment to work in.

Next up was Gin Lalli and her bright red stress bucket.

Offering solution-focused therapy, Gin shared her secret to eliminating stress, anxiety and depression with the help of her red bucket. Teaching us all how to limit the stress in our lives and prevent our own buckets from filling up, Gin talked to us about the power of neuroscience and REM sleep in combating our own inner worries.

After lunch and some networking we were introduced to our final speaker of the day, Gillian Fleming of Mint Ventures, who shared her experience of working in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, advising and nurturing early stage ideas and enterprises. Her inspirational speech focused on the joy and benefits of investing in women-led businesses with an environmental, ethical or social purpose.

So, here’s to the splendiferous women of the ASB conference. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, expertise and enthusiasm.

B is for a braw day out

As my first event of this kind, it was definitely an amazing experience. I loved getting to share more about Planit Scotland and what I do, but most importantly, I had the chance to hear a wide variety of business stories from those I met throughout the day – plus, I got to put the Planit networking blog to good use!

Thanks ASB for letting me be an honorary member for the day and congratulations to all the finalists and award winners – here’s to girl power!
